Nutrition research project/homework

Hey Planners,

Today we are working on creating:

  •  an example of a healthy and yummy day of eating menu. In pairs create one that follows the food guide. Due next class.
  • Keep track of your eating for one week (sheet provided) include snacks, supplements, and water. Due before the winter break

What follows is the assignment we are starting in class.

Nutrition Inquiry
Research /’poster’/presentation

Over the next several classes you will choose an inquiry question to do with an aspect of health, related to nutrition.

You may ask and then answer any question related to nutrition but to get you started thinking I’ve provided some possibilities on the back of this sheet.

Your tasks are to:
·      Choose a topic
·      Define a question about that topic
·      Research (reputable sources)
·      Answer the question, providing enough detail into the factors related to the question that we all can understand the topic clearly (you must not merely cut and paste; please put into your own words).
·      Produce a visual display/poster/model/video clips etc. to demonstrate to the class, the Key ideas relating to your findings.
·      Be prepared to provide a 3-minute talk/demonstration of your findings.

1.   Your first assignment is to fill in the provided outline
2.   I will expect a rough draft/visual plan (due date to be announced)
3.   The write up to be submitted to me ((due date to be announced)
4.   Visual display/talk (due date to be announced)

I will provide rubrics and due dates before the winter break.

You may choose from among, but are not confined to the following possible topics. (First come first get on the topic choices)

·      What is smart snacking?
·      How much to eat, what and when?
·      Why drink water and how much?
·      Is coffee ok for teens?
·      Energy drinks, dangerous or benign?
·      What are antioxidants and why should I care?
·      ‘Good fat’ ‘bad fat’; how can I tell the difference?
·      What is ‘processed food’ and should I avoid it?
·      How can I maintain a healthy body weight?
·      What are the easy basics of nutrition?
·      What is cholesterol? Why care?
·      Is organic food worth the extra cost?
·      What’s so important about Calcium?
·      How can I make healthy yummy and easy meals?
·      How do I eat healthfully when eating out?
·      How do diet and mood relate?
·      Vegan, vegetarian, omnivore, which is right for me?

These are just a few ideas; you are welcome to ask your own questions, research and answer them then teach us all about your findings!
