Calendar of events

Hi all,

We have had a good level of inquiry around nutrition and healthy eating. Well done all.

As we move toward testing day, I thought you'd like a list of what each class will hold:

  • Jan. 25 This is a review day. Refer to the study questions posted below.
  • Jan. 26/27 Condomania Blush presenters coming. 
  • Jan. 28  This is a review day. Refer to the study questions posted below. (ski day)
  • Jan. 29/Feb. 1 Jeopardy game to prep. for the text (don't miss this and be sure to take notes)
  • Feb. 2, 3 Nutrition test.  There will be 2 different tests, they will both be short answer.
  • Feb. 4 Healthy living/relationships
  • Feb. 5.10 Course planning (don't miss this)
  • Feb. 11,12 Healthy relationships
  • Feb. 15/16 Course planning day 2 /healthy relationships

Nutrition study questions


·      Give two reasons why we need fat in our diets.                                  
·      The healthiest type of fat is ___(saturated/unsaturaded/trans fat)________________ and explain why.

·      List two illnesses associated with obesity (too much fat).    

·      In what ways is fat essential for our health? (3 reasons min.)

·      Why is it recommended that we not eat trans fats?

·      We need to eat milk and its substitutes.                                               
a)    What essential nutrients do they provide us with?
b)    How do these essential nutrients aid in our health?

·      According to Canada’s food guide, what food group is the one we should choose the most of?   
·      What Vitamins or nutrients are associated with positive mood?
·      List 2 benefits of anti-oxidants and 1 good source.
·      What are two non-meat sources of protein? List 3 reasons we need protein.
·      What information can we find on food labels printed on the packages of food?
·      What is smart snacking? Explain why it is helpful to snack and what are better choices.
·      What is a helpful way to remember  the size of a serving of cheese and meat protein?
·      We are encouraged to ‘eat a rainbow’ of food. Explain the reasons this is a useful way to remember healthy eating.
·      What are the risks associated with caffeine particularly for youth? List 3
·      What are the benefits of eating organic? What are the draw backs?
·      What is vegetarianism? What is veganism? What are the benefits/risks of each? defined vs Vegetarian) Lowers obesity/access to hormones reduced/ethical/ but must watch vitamins and finding inexpensive alternatives tricky.
·      List 5 diverse things I can do to help me maintain proper nutrition and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
·      List connections between mental health and nutritional health
·      Energy drink are risky list reasons and side effects
·      How to eat healthy when eating out? (fiber, cooking method, no dessert, healthy source/fresh, avoid salt, veggies, )
·      How can organic food benefit us?
·      What is processed food? Why care? Avoid chemical processing.
·      Eggs (calcium, chlorine for brain, vit. B2 against cancer, protein iron)
·      What is the relationship between being active and nutrition for health?
·      How does being active effect one? Give 3 examples
·      Why is breakfast important? Give 2 reasons.
·      Why eat veggies? (blood pressure, no kidney stones, calcium , bits. Iron, minerals, lower disease risks) 7-8 serviings rainbow colour,
·      Calcium for bones but what else? What sources? Yogurt, milk, sardines, spinach, soybeans and tofu. Age related for bone health.
·      What are the effects of insufficient calcium?
·      Vitamin D benefits?
·      Which is better juice or fruit?
·       Is the brown colour of food better?
·      Why do we need water?
·      Diet and mood:How do these relate? What should I eat to feel happy?
·      Why eat breakfast?
·      Glutin, what is it and why should we care?
·      What is processed food? Why avoid it?
·      What are antioxidants ; how do they help; and how do I get them?
